What Is Aromatherapy and How Does It Help Me?

Updated: Feb 9

Since a health emergency was declared in almost all countries, families have been forced to stay at home, this has completely changed the way we lead our personal and work lives. Yes working from home, wearing your sweat pants while wearing your smart work shirt looking like a million bucks above your waist. The hours of free time that we didn't know we had, the days seeming to have grown extra hours.

The other side of the lockdown, the combination of remote work and long working hours, the hours and hours of free time has exacerbated a host of mental health issues, which has caused massive spikes in those suffering from stress, insomnia, and depression.

issues that have cropped up during this quarantine. People have turned to alternatives such as aromatherapy and essential oils in times of quarantine and mandatory isolation. Some call it bs, other's swear by it. Let's have a look at some of of the benefits of this practice and if they live up to the hype!

So WTH Is Aromatherapy Anyway?

Aromatherapy consists of inhaling (SMELLING - don't start snorting the stuff!!) essential oils with the aim of improving your physical or mental state. But how does it work? Chemical substances in the air are received by the chemoreceptors of smell and produce a relaxing, feel-good feeling, inducing stress relief. Aromatherapy undoubtedly has several benefits, the most significant are: it helps to generate positive emotions, because smells influence the mood, help us relax, reduce stress, relieve pain, help us to improve sleep.

For their part, essential oils are much more than pleasant aromas. These powerful botanical extracts are the vessels that will transport you to nature, unlocking the secrets that nature has kept for years and that today manifests them in these essential oils.. Essential oils are mainly extracted through careful steam distillation and the purest ones are much more powerful and effective than dried herbs, providing fast and effective results.

A 100% Natural Alternative

The benefit of using essential oils for mood management is that, unlike other questionable or even potentially dangerous methods that are available on the market, they can help naturally calm and elevate emotions.

Although essential oils are extremely powerful, they are extremely pure extracts, so their use is still safe, making them the best alternative to many of the other questionable and potentially legal mood management tactics out there.

Smell These Troubles Away With Essential Oils

Confusion

It refers to the loss of orientation or ability to correctly locate points of reference such as time, etc emotions. So many things in your head that you don't know how to feel? Okay, to calm your confusion try the following essential oils: Tangerine, Bergamot, Peppermint, Rosemary, Cedar, Cardamom, Grapefruit, Tea Tree and Thyme.

Despair

The loss of patience, tranquillity, hope and courage. If you're feeling desperate, give yourself a few minutes to breathe in these wonderful essential oils that will help bring calm, hope and balance: Rosemary, Mint, Tangerine, Cedar, Lemon and Thyme.

Anxiety

It is our response to extreme situations, characterized by a feeling of anguish with fear and the appearance of accelerated heart rate, breathing and sweating.

The first thing that can be done is to try to remain calm, take deep breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth in a rhythmic and increasingly gradual manner, to normalize breathing. Among the essential oils that help calm anxiety are: Lavender, Bergamot, Cedar, Lemon and Patchouli.

Fear

Fear is a feeling of mistrust that leads to believe that an event contrary to what is desired or a feeling of anguish caused by the presence of a real or imaginary danger will occur. Sometimes it is very difficult for us to accept that we are afraid, we deny it and part of the problem is that we want to flee from this situation. Recognizing it costs a lot of pride and work but it is a step towards being able to let go and heal the circumstance that is creating this emotion. Accepting the emotion and trying to regain your balance is something that is not easy for those who have suffered mental and emotional health problems.

The essential oils that help you focus and feel better during a feeling of fear are: Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Orange and Tangerine.

The person who suffers from it feels as if they are losing control and may present physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, pain in the stomach or chest, difficulty breathing, dizziness, sweating, tingling in the hands, heat or chills, among others.

It can start when a person is under a lot of stress. Psychiatric or psychological therapy is recommended, as it can help you identify and change thought patterns before panic attacks appear again. Some of the things you can do is reduce stimuli, concentrate on relaxing your muscles, practice a breathing technique, there are many in yoga and meditation, avoid caffeine, listen to something that calms you and you can use the following oils to accompany these techniques essentials: Lavender, Rosemary, Bergamot, Thyme and Mint.
